Phobias / O.C.D.

What is a Phobia?

A phobia is an irrational, persistent fear that appears when an individual is exposed to a specific object, situation or even people. In fact, a phobia can manifest itself in almost anything.

The characteristic traits are usually defined as intense, powerful feelings of impending danger, and the only option that the sufferer can do is to avoid the stimulus at all costs.

As this is a neurotic disorder, the causes could have roots connected to the past and this can also be explored in therapy. Despite it being a stubborn disorder, there is a way out. With appropriate counselling and with therapy, incorporating the use of a Cognitive Behavioural approach, research has shown that the individual can look forward to a good recovery within time.

What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder? (O.C.D.)

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a neurotic illness characterised by overwhelming intrusive thoughts on a continuous basis and a feeling of powerlessness to ever control or eliminate them. The sufferer becomes so distressed throughout this experience it leaves him/her isolated and even more powerless. This, in turn, compounds the effects of the illness. Stress is a very big factor in compounding the symptoms and the patient needs to learn how to manage their stressors more effectively. Recovery can be reached with appropriate counselling and a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy approach.
