What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, also known as CBT, is a therapeutic model of psychotherapy which examines our daily ‘thinking’ and ‘behaviour’. These two components of our lives have a direct effect on our feelings.

Over time, thought patterns can become very negative, causing a distorted view of oneself and the world around a person. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy involves working on challenging core beliefs about how an individual thinks about themselves, other people and the world around them. At the same time, it also examines the choices the individual is making and the reasons why. In therapy, the person identifies the root causes of his emotional state and is given ways to change what may be necessary.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a very solution-focused therapy and can, most often, be a short-term therapy. Gradually, with each counselling session, clients are helped to change their thinking and behaviour and so effectively begin to make more effective, productive choices and lead a more positive, satisfying, quality lifestyle.
