What is Sex Addiction?
Sex addiction can be characterised by any sexual behaviour that has become out of control for the individual, and now they feel powerless to stop it. Sex addiction can just remain with obsessive thoughts only. However, this eventually leads to behaviours, such as spending long hours watching pornography and masturbation when other very important things need to be attended to. These thoughts and behaviours can affect the person’s own responsibilities in life and their relationships around them, sometimes with serious consequences. Other behaviours can progress to visiting internet cafes, massage parlours, escort services, prostitutes, etc. These lifestyle behaviours become habit-forming, leading to compulsions and eventually to an addiction. Some sufferers can find themselves thinking about sex every day, even when they feel they don’t want to.
Sex addiction can also be characterised by an inability to be intimate with other people and so leading to unhealthy sexual relationships and behaviours with others. This may have started in early life or even adolescence, allowing the deviant behaviour to continue to grow and now become part of that person’s everyday life.
Sex addicts, while on sex websites, may run the risk of dabbling in illegal porn sites and can, at times, find themselves in criminal circumstances.
