F.A.Q.

What is Counselling & Psychotherapy and can it work for me?

Counselling & Psychotherapy is a confidential, non-judgemental therapeutic setting where a person can avail of an opportunity to take time out in their lives to explore and examine any problems and issues that they may be experiencing; to get a greater awareness and understanding of these issues and move towards overcoming the obstacles that may be hindering their mental and emotional well-being. This in turn helps the person lead a much happier and healthier life. What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy also known as CBT is a therapeutic model of psychotherapy which examines our daily ‘thinking’ and ‘acting’ as these two components have a direct affect on our feelings. It includes challenging our core beliefs about how we view ourselves, other people and the world around us. Gradually with each session in therapy, clients are helped to change their thinking and behaviour and so effectively begin to make better choices and lead a more positive, satisfying, quality life.

What is Addiction?

There are many interpretations and explanations for the term addiction but one that defines it well is:

“Addiction is a persistent, habit forming compulsion, where the person has become dependent on substances such as alcohol, drugs, food, etc., or are involved in habitual activities such as shopping, spending, gambling, pornography, and other sexual activities. Over time these activities become mood altering behaviours and eventually progress into an addiction.”

A person comes to realise that this addictive behaviour is now affecting their quality of life and those around them and are powerless to stop. This is where the need for professional input can make the difference and help a person to move towards his/her own recovery.

How long does a Counselling session last?

Each counselling session will last for approx. one hour.

How long will I be in counselling for?

It is very difficult to ascertain how long a client will be in therapy. Each person is different and each problem unique to them. Therefore depending on the issues and the length of time they have been experiencing the problem, a clients time in counselling could be very brief or may be extended. However, because Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is very ‘solution focused’ and very effective, it can be seen as a much shorter-term counselling process.

How much does it cost?

Our centre runs a sliding scale so our costs vary, to suit the financial needs of each person and the type of therapy they need. For more information you can email us with your enquiries or to book an appointment.
