What is Substance Abuse Addiction?
Along with the numerous behavioural addictions, e.g. gambling, sex, shopping, etc. there are also substance abuse addiction. These include substances such as – Alcohol, Marijuana, Cocaine, food, over the counter drugs and prescription drugs, such as sleeping tablets, mood stabilisers and others.
Addiction is a complex disease and should be treated as such. We know that many people experiment with different substances at different times in their lives, and in particular adolescence. The majority of people will move on from these substances but unfortunately a minority of people can get ‘hooked’. The main reasons an individual can develop a substance addiction can be through – having a genetic makeup, a particular personality type, and also through the environment they live in. There are possible other minor factors involved but these are the main factors.
To recover from addiction an individual must be ready and really ‘want’ to change . This is most important. When this first basic step is realised the process can then begin. The initial part of the process of recovery is to assess the individual’s level of tolerance to the substance they are using and then recommend a further treatment plan. This can begin through a visit to their GP, a Drug Centre or a private visit to a counsellor/psychotherapist who are trained in this area.
